Why you should tie the knot in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka honeymoon

We’re crushing on destination weddings against the breathtaking backdrop of a pristine beach, dreamy lake or lazy river in Sri Lanka. You’ve just got to see any of the stunning venues at Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts to believe us.

Trincomalee Beach Anchor

It’s hard to believe that Sri Lanka is just a two-and-a-half hour flight away from Mumbai. We recently visited the lush island nation off the southern tip of India and came away blown by its unspoilt beaches and enchanting riverside spots that are firmly etched in our hearts. Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital and home to the international airport, comes with the luxuries and facilities (and traffic!) one expects of a city. While we didn’t spend time there, we ventured further into the heart of Sri Lanka, specifically to the rustic town of Habarana, the lazy coastal town of Trincomalee and the misty hill town of Kandy to scout for those rare but incredibly beautiful venues for destination weddings.

We left convinced that Sri Lanka is perfect for destination weddings of the moment, particularly if you’ve always dreamt of your big day by a lake or river at sunset, or even a sunrise ceremony with a stunning beach for a backdrop. Naturally, wedding photography ops are aplenty!

Cinnamon Citadel Kandy

It’s only been in the last few years that Indians seem to have woken up to the fact that the ideal holiday destination lies just beyond our southern shores. Yet, our visit left us wondering why Sri Lanka isn’t already on the destination wedding map. After all, the country comes with a unique cultural heritage, nature at its best, spectacular vistas and finger-licking local cuisine. Sri Lanka’s hotels and resorts leave no stone unturned when it comes to luxurious offerings and wedding facilities — not forgetting the kind hospitality of its ever-smiling and diligent people. These are some of the most important factors when considering a destination wedding.

Cinnamon Lodge Habarana

The luxurious Cinnamon Lodge Habarana property sits in the lap of nature, and weddings on the enchanting lake are its speciality

On this trip, we made note of the fact that Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, a Sri Lankan hospitality brand launched in 2005, is a huge player in the market even as international hotel groups are making a foray in the country. And, after staying at three of Cinnamon’s 11 properties in Sri Lanka — Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, Trinco Blu by Cinnamon and Cinnamon Citadel Kandy — we still can’t stop gushing about the magical venues and settings on offer for weddings. That each property has a unique local flavour with contemporary touches and a top-notch level of hospitality is a given.

Needless to say, you can leave it up to Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts to create magical and memorable moments on your big day. From incredibly beautiful wedding setups and a delicious spread of cuisines including Sri Lankan, continental and Indian, right up to special itineraries for the newly weds and their guests, you can leave it in the trusty hands of Cinnamon to take care of it all right down to the last detail.

Venue-wise, Cinnamon Lodge Habarana offers enchanting weddings on a lake, while Trinco Blu by Cinnamon’s speciality is a scenic beach setting with white canopies and the like. Cinnamon Citadel Kandy is perfect for very intimate weddings with the Mahaweli River and surrounding hills as witnesses. Each of these hotels offers charming suites for the bride and groom and their families, and luxurious accommodation for guests. The hotel even recommends vendor services including decorators, floral designers and entertainment.

Your guests will also have much to do before and after the wedding without stepping out of the hotel. Spa therapies, riverboat rides and beach time were some of the activities we indulged in during our stay at the Cinnamon’s properties. Of course, Cinnamon goes all out to offer curated itineraries too that include activities like snorkelling, whale watching, visits to Buddhist temples and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, elephant safaris and local shopping jaunts.

Elephants in Minneriya

With spectacular venues and exciting activities such as these, it’s hard to resist a destination wedding in Sri Lanka. Add to this the convenience of travelling to Sri Lanka, which is just a short flight away from Indian metros. The visa-on-arrival facility makes travel for guests that much more convenient. We, however, got our visa in advance and couldn’t help but be amazed at the lightening speed at which it arrived in our email inbox (under an hour, just for the record!).

Besides, getting around Sri Lanka is easy by road or even rail, although it must be mentioned that a minimum of 2 hours travel time between towns and cities needs to be taken into consideration for road travel. Luckily, the drive is pleasurable thanks to the unnaturally high standard of roads most of which are flanked by bright green paddy fields. Stay alert and you’re likely to spot a pride of peacocks and families of langurs by the road. Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts is more than equipped to help you plan transport services to and from the airport as well as between towns for your families and guests, too.

Stay tuned for our subsequent blog posts where we share our thoughts, in detail, about each of the three incredibly beautiful Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts properties in Sri Lanka.
