Weddings in India are all about families and that means one thing – lots of children! Our Indian shaadis are busy, lively events; add a bunch of bored kids to the mix and it’s a recipe for chaos. One of the smartest things you can do is to make some provisions and plan a few fun activities for the kids at your wedding celebrations. We have listed a few ideas to help keep the young ones busy, all you need to do is tweak them to suit your wedding function and budget!

Create a play area: If your venue space allows, plan for a separate kids’ play area to keep them separate from the space where you are having your ceremony. Provide interactive entertainment like a small themed space like a restaurant type place or game room for the kids with things they will enjoy like kid-friendly foods, a dessert bar, sand boxes etc. It will be easier to have a slightly more controlled environment than just waiting for parents to chase their kids around.

Get some help: Designating or hiring someone to watch over the children is always helpful. They can keep an eye on the children and make sure they don’t stray away from the main wedding areas or create disturbances. You can even hire live entertainment like jugglers, magicians, a dance instructor, face painters, henna artists, balloon artists and such to keep them happily engaged.

Kid-friendly favours: Wedding favours that double as kids’ activities goody bag are a perfect way to keep them busy and hopefully well-behaved at the table. You can include stuff like disposable cameras, colouring books and crayons (no stains!), puzzles, activity books, stickers and small games. At events like the mehendi you can give the little girls ‘dress-up’ sets with bangles, bindis, dupattas etc. so they can doll up and enjoy the festivities. Another thing that parents will definitely appreciate is to include some munchies to tide the kids over till meal time, so less crankiness! A children’s goody bag will probably help to keep them at the table and away from trouble. Remember it’s best to have one for each child so that there are no fights.

A time-out room for parents: Check if your venue has a room close by where parents can take their children if they are sleepy or in tantrum mode. This will be especially useful and convenient for guests with infants and toddlers so that they can feed, change or take care of their little ones without disturbing any of the wedding proceedings.
