It is no secret that Bollywood and the Indian film industry have a huge impact on many lives, influencing everything from the way people view the world to their sartorial choices. Indian weddings in India itself as well as in places like the United Kingdom and United States are often glossed over in total Bollywood style and most people love it!
Bollywood wedding movies dominated by filmmakers like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra, are a hugely popular genre in themselves and these wedding movies with their elaborate sets and costumes, along with the catchy wedding tunes have influenced Indian celebrations for decades. Apart from the wedding décor and themes, one of the biggest indicators of how Bollywood affects our lifestyles is the big impact it has on wedding and bridal fashion. It’s not just the wedding movies that catch the eye but also the often plush sets and costumes in big-budget blockbusters and period films.
Have you ever marveled at the intricate and opulent bridal wear or latest wedding trends at a wedding you went to recently? Odds are a lot of it is a reflection of the latest blockbuster and the actress’s enviable wardrobe in the film. Unfortunately, along with the good sometimes even the gaudy screen outfits find themselves on enthusiastic wedding guests and brides!
Let’s take a look back at some of the Bollywood movies and their costumes that really incited a mass appeal and served as inspiration to the bridal fashion at the time. One of the first ones that come to mind is actress Madhuri Dixit’s wardrobe from the movie Hum Apke Hain Kaun. Her purple sari and the green outfit with the elaborate neck embellishments spawned various look-alikes and reproductions for many a wedding. As did her bouncy, wavy hair! Designer Neeta Lulla shot to mass fame with her elaborate and gorgeous costumes in movies like Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Her creations were top of many Indian brides’ wish-lists.
Another big movie that influenced wedding style was Jodha Akbar, set in the Mughal era. The gorgeous and luxurious lehengas and sarees and the drool-worthy jewellery flashed on screen and sighs from brides to be were heard around the country! Everything from the heavy maangtikas to the rich payals were absolutely stunning.
It’s not just the clothes and accessories, but hairstyles and make-up that get that Bollywood makeover. So strong is the magic of the movies that even the retro styles from golden oldies are back in vogue today.
